[Sorry for the old post...its from February...and I never posted it. I suck. Carry On]
So--buried under FEET of snow...with a day off from work....I've decided to take some time to bombard you all with some stuff I am loving right now. I have been cuddled up in bed all morning catching up on the latest issue of Rolling Stone and perusing my usual music sites over a cup of tea and reruns of Sex in the City (could a morning GET any better?!).
Without further ado--we'll start things off with a recommendation. :)
New: Broken Bells--"The High Road"
My boyfriend suggested I check out Broken Bells. I knew the name sounded familiar--and realized that was because Rolling Stone just did a writeup on them. So I will introduce them to you guys as well! :) As the bf noted, they have a little something that's vaguely reminiscent of Oasis. At the same time though they combine a slight psychedelic sound with more of a grounded hiphop feel. If that sounds simply AWFUL to you--just give it a chance. You might find yourself pleasantly surprised. Rolling Stone described them as "part Kanye West, part Brian Eno" which I feel really hits the nail on the head. (Everyone knows who Kanye is--unfortunately, haha--but for those of you who are unfamiliar with Brian Eno--he is most known for his experimental work with ambient music (synthesizers and the like) in the 70's and 80's. He was part of the band Roxy Music in the 70s before moving on to a solo career.)You might also recognize the vocals as lead singer James Mercer from the Shins. Anyway, if you're anything like me-you get tired of hearing bands that sound the same--so this was a nice little change of pace.
Old: Phoenix--"Lisztomania"
Okay by now EVERYONE has most likely heard of Phoenix. If not--have no fear--its not too late for you to join in the craze!! Haha Okay but seriously--there is something totally catchy about these guys. Its one of those bands...you know the kind I'm talking about...where you just can't help but move to their music. Rolling Stone noted in their writeup in regards to how these hits and a lot of their music "thrives on minimal guitar grooves that emphasize rhythm above all else"--which is where the dancing comes in. This French alt rock band has REALLY taken off lately. Nominated for a bunch of awards...popping up at tons of summer music festivals...and tons of media exposure (commercials, movie trailers, etc.) Personally, I love their song "Lisztomania", which has gotten a lot of airtime along with their other hit "1901". But if you're looking for something not so...popular-and maybe a little less "pop-py and upbeat"...check out "Everything is Everything" and "Rome".

Corinne Bailey Rae, Elizabeth and the Catapult, & Orianthi
Today I'm givin' my love to the ladies and focusing on a few female artists/groups that I love. These are much harder to come by.
Old: Corinne Bailey Rae--"Trouble Sleeping"
This little lady has been a love of mine for quite some time now. If you are familiar with it her at all, you're probably familiar with her song "Put Your Records On" because it got a lot of airtime when her first album came out. For me, the single selected from an album for radio play is usually the song I like the least--and that is the case here. She has so much more to offer than that. There is so much soul in her singing, and her English accent adds a nice little touch. haha Rae released her 2nd album, The Sea, one week ago today. I am in the process of checking it out--so I will really focus on her 1st album here. Her first album, which is self-titled, is one that I love to just put on and listen to in its entirety. Especially while driving. It is very soothing. Her sound does have a touch of jazz to it, and many have likened her to the great Billie Holiday.
Other songs to Check Out: "Like A Star" and "I'd Like To"
New: Elizabeth and the Catapult--"Race You Back Home"
Thanks to a reader recommendation a few months ago I was introduced to the musical styling of Elizabeth and the Catapult. :) They're a pop/rock trio out of Brooklyn with a really sunny, upbeat sound. The "pop" label might instantly turn some of you off, but labels are silly. :) When I think of pop I think of happy, bubblegum bands that are instantly radio-ready. Elizabeth and the Catapult ARE fairly upbeat and I would venture to say their music IS rather radio-ready, but there is still something about them that I really like. If you're in the mood for something entirely uncomplicated...you've found your match with this group. And sometimes that's exactly what you're looking for. A lot of their music is the kind you put on and just can't help but move to. :)
Other Songs to Check Out: "Momma's Boy"
New: Orianthi--"According to You"
This Aussie chic has been on my radar for a while, although she is moving rather quickly into the spotlight due to her collaboration with Michael Jackson as the guitarist for his This Is It comeback tour. She's made a few appearances on the talk show circuit lately, which will definitely help her career. Her single "According to You" did quite well on the charts in the UK and is also doing well here in the US. In my opinion, it will be interesting to see what her next move is musically. I'll admit, and I think most guys would agree, there is something hot about a girl that plays the guitar. Vocally, I'd compare her to an edgier Kelly Clarkson. But the focus is really on this girl's skills on the guitar. One of her noted influences is Carlos Santana, which doesn't come as a real shocker considering her sound. I would love to see her stray a little further from the "pop" sound, especially in her vocals, and move into something a little more harsh and bluesy. I'd say you should definitely give her a shot.
Other songs to Check Out: "Lights of Manos" (instrumental)
Feel free to give me your feedback on my picks. And Send me your recommendations! I'm always interested in hearing something new! :)

Cory Chisel and the Wandering Sons, The Avett Brothers, & South Jordan
First post of 2010! Wooooo! haha Okay...I know I'm behind--it's February. :) So...what am I starting out my new year listening to? Quite a few things actually! After all--a new year means lots of new things! So I encourage you to embrace new music in OH-TEN!!! :) Maybe it could be a resolution of sorts. So--without further ado...
Old: South Jordan--"Firefly"
I definitely have a soft spot for these guys because they formed in Bloomington, IN. :) I met the lead singer, Michael David Hall one day when he came into The Buckle while I was working. He mentioned that he had just finished performing at the IU Dance Marathon, and being me--with my music obsession--I asked what kind of music they played. Well, this lovely boy pulled out a CD and handed it to me (great promotion skills, haha). So once he left I immediately ran to the back to put it into the CD player. They have a sound that's vaguely reminiscent of The Fray. Michael has a really amazing voice. Oddly enough they recently put a cover of The Fray's "You Found Me" on their MySpace page that is pretty spot on. Lyrically they are quite talented, which is always something I'm attracted to. I have so much respect for people with such talent and I would love to turn some people outside of the Midwest on to them (although they're doing a pretty good job of that themselves). In my opinion--they sound nothing like a band that's just starting their musical journey. :) But I'll leave that to you to decide. http://www.myspace.com/southjordanmusic
Other songs to Check Out: "Fatal Flaw" and "Runaway"
New: Cory Chisel & The Wandering Sons--"Born Again"
This Wisconsin folk-rock band is considered part of the "Americana" genre and that really hits the nail on the head as far as their sound goes. Their Southern roots are definitely present in their sound. There's also something very...Springsteen-esque about the vocals. After doing a little research I found out that a few of the band members are actually from The Raconteurs! The music has a sort of "earthy" sound to it. Just very...natural. In an interview Cory discussed his hesitancy to ever leave the Midwest and explained how "nature is a critical part of his artistic process". He said, "If you’re in a superficial environment, I think the music tends to lean that way. Something about being in the woods… it’s a critic, the environment itself". There is something really beautiful about that mentality and it really shines through in their work. I always love music that is raw. I think this is why I find myself attracted to indie bands--no one has tampered with their sound or "corrected" anything. It's just musicians doing what feels/sounds right to them. This is a group you definitely don't want to miss out on!!
Other songs to Check Out: "Calm Down"
New: The Avett Brothers--"I and Love and You"
Well it seems my two new bands are both a bit southern...which is something VERY new for me. In the past I have stayed far away from anything remotely reminiscent of country music. I'll admit that I'm usually pretty quick to write off anyone that claims to have a "southern sound". But one of MY new year's resolution is to give more thought to things I might not normally be open to. So--here goes nothing, right? I mean I love classic Southern Rock...so I can't be a hypocrite, now can I? Well, this folk-rock, bluegrass trio has really won my heart. They are definitely hitting the music scene in a big way...having recently opened for Dave Matthews Band and Widespread Panic, as well as performing with the likes of Wilco and My Morning Jacket. Some of their songs have a bit heavier of a Southern influence than others, with their heavy use of banjo as evidence. Although those may take a little more warming up for me, I have found a number of songs I really do enjoy. They have taken their southern roots and infused them with folk-rock and it is really relaxing to listen to. I hope you'll agree! :)
Other songs to Check Out: "Will You Return?" and "Find My Love"
As always...turn it on and turn it UPPPPP!!! :)

The Decemberists, The Gaslight Anthem, John Mayer, Matt&Kim, Modest Mouse, Alberta Cross, Owl City, & Portugal. The Man
Okay. So to make up for my SERIOUS lack of posts lately…I have comprised a mega-list of both old and new bands for your listening pleasure, as well as some songs I am absolutely loving right now. :) So—it’s just a jumble of auditory goodies here today! Enjoy, and as always—let me know what you think!
The Decemberists
If you haven’t yet checked out this Portland rock group…I’d advise you to do so—STAT. They played at Lollapalooza this summer, and although we didn’t get a chance to check them out, I had gotten into them a short time before the festival. “The Rake’s Song” is their most notable song at this point--I noticed it on a couple of local radio stations beginning this summer. They have a folk rock/indie rock kind of sound, which they combine with some other really great components like strings, a bit of heavy metal, and even—yes—a children’s choir. Haha “O Valencia!” is a particular fave of mine. It’s much more upbeat than “The Rake’s Song”. I dunno what it is about it—but it’s quite catchy!
The Gaslight Anthem
The Gaslight Anthem is another great band from Lollapalooza! In my opinion, they have a bit of a “Killers” vibe. These guys are from New Brunswick, NJ—so that of course makes them instantly cooler. :) And being from Jersey, they have what some like to call that “Jersey Shore Sound” which is clearly explained in their love for Springsteen and the influence he has had on their music. Check out their song “Here’s Looking At You Kid”.
John Mayer—Battle Studies
I have to admit to my intense love affair with Mr. Mayer. It has been a serious love since the day I first heard him in the summer after my sophomore year in high school. Although I will always have a soft spot for his first album Room For Squares, his new album Battle Studies is FAR from a disappointment. I have listened to it repeatedly from start to finish lately. Of course the song that’s getting overplayed on the radio right now(hey it’s a pet peeve of mine—sorry!), “Who Says?” is truly a great one. Although “Edge of Desire” is one of my personal favorites on this album. John Mayer’s voice has the ability to make me melt (and I don’t think I’m alone here). As most people who read my blog know…I’m all about the lyrics. And while John is a master both vocally and on the guitar…his lyrics are outstanding. There is really not one song on the album that I don’t like—and those are the best kinds of albums…the ones where you put it in and listen to it all the way through without even realizing. So—-I sincerely suggest you check out the album in its entirety the next time you have some down time. And hey—-he looks hot as HELL on the cover if that helps ;-)
Matt &Kim
This cute little duo hails from Brooklyn, NY and their sweet tunes may have caught your attention as their song “Daylight” was featured on a Bacardi commercial fairly recently. They always put the catchiest songs on commercials, so this was one that I heard and had to look into. I spent far too long saying “who IS that?!”. It’s got that fun, dancey vibe. This song in particular has a lot going on. There’s an electronic sound, backed by strings, and a nice cheap synth sound all topped off with an old-school hip hop beat. You might be thinking “Um…yuck?” but check it out! It’s surprisingly appealing! Some other good ones to check out—“Lessons Learned” and “Cinders”. And go ahead…dance in your underwear. It’s the perfect soundtrack for that! :)
Modest Mouse—No One’s First and You’re Next
Modest Mouse released an EP this August which I have just gotten around to listening to. And….It. Is. Splendid. First, the song “King Rat” is a really awesome song, and the recently released video for it is just as great. (It is also noteworthy due to the late Heath Ledger’s contribution to the video—AND proceeds from downloading the video on iTunes go to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society which is a non-profit marine wildlife conservation group.) This is another album that I really enjoyed start to finish. It’s funny how that works out being that these are all previously unreleased tracks. Yet somehow, they’re cohesive.
Alberta Cross
This is a semi-new find of mine. They’re a blues rock band out of London whose sound has been compared, by some, to the likes of Kings of Leon and Neil Young. But I’m not one to make such comparisons. Haha Sure—they all have that blues influence, but I’ll be honest—I’m not one who’s quick to make comparison to my loves—KOL. I actually found out, after the fact, that they performed at Lollapalooza this summer. Obviously, we did not see them. Lol Anyway, they have a great kind of…updated bluesy sound. There is something so beautiful about lead singer Petter Ericson Stakee’s voice. Two great songs to check out “Low Man” and “The Thief & The Heartbreaker”.
Owl City song “Fireflies”
Okay…as much as I hate to—I’ll admit it. ::whispers:: “I like Owl City”. There. Secret’s out. You might be wondering why this is something I don’t want to admit. Well…lets just say…they’re started playing Owl City on Teen Nick (not that I watch). Haha Okay Okay…now onto the music itself. This band from Minnesota reminds me of The Postal Service. A lot. And after doing a little research, I found they’ve been accused numerous times of ripping off The Postal Service’s sound. Maybe that’s why I like them? Eh, oh well—The Postal Service will always be better. Anyway, as you might have guessed…they have the electronic sound commonly found in their “synthopop” genre. And whether or not they’re ripping off someone else…give em a listen. It can’t hurt. :)
Portugal. The Man.
This alternative/experimental rock band hails ALLLLL the way from Wasilla, Alaska. Yep. That's right. Sarah Palin country. Bet you can see Russia from their house too! ;-) Haha Alright all kidding aside. As someone who is into vocals and lyrics--lead singer John Gourley's voice is something that is really distinct about this group. His high-pitched vocals alongside lyrics full of imagery combine to create some really good shit. Being an experimental group, they play with things like drum machines, keyboard, and even synth loops in their music. And they've got a lot of soul. :) So...check em out.
Okay loves, that's all for now! Enjoy...it's a lot!!! haha

Cage the Elephant & We Were Promised Jetpacks
Hey everyone! Sorry its been so long, again! Since my last post I have finally moved home to New York and should have more time on my hands to keep this far more updated as I begin my quest for a job (along with the rest of 2009's graduating classes nationwide). Haha Lollapalooza was an absolutely amazing experience. I could blog for days about that in itself! Hope you are enjoying the start of the holiday season. It snowed for the first time here in NY this weekend (YUCKKKK!). Here are some tunes to help make the cold weather a little less painful. :)
Old:Cage the Elephant--"Back Against the Wall"
This group of Kentucky boys produce a sound quite far from their roots in a strict, Pentecostal home. They have a rather bluesy-punk sound, which some have likened to that of the White Stripes (although I can't say I ENTIRELY agree, heh). Starting out as a hit in the UK, they semi-recently scored a spot performing on Letterman which will is definitely helping them to become more well known here in the US. I really love lead singer Matt Shultz's voice; it really reminds me of someone--but im drawing a complete blank! haha maybe I'll think of it eventually...anyway, "Ain't No Rest for the Wicked" is their most widely known song at this point. It is another great song in addition to my current personal fave, "Back Against the Wall". So...check em out. They've got some great jams. And if you're like me--you can dance while you wrap some Christmas presents. :)
Other songs to Check Out: "Ain't No Rest for the Wicked" and "In One Ear"
New: We Were Promised Jetpacks--"Quiet Little Voices"
I know...I know...you're probably saying "Come on...another band full of boys with foreign accents?!". But what can I say??? It must be a weakness of mine! Haha Accents aside--these Scottish boys really put together an awesome indie rock band! Their debut album was just released this June, and is definitely something worth checking out. They're finished up touring overseas this summer, and hit a lot of the major US cities during September and October. Their lyrics are laced with sentimentality that is rather Dashboard-esque, but it is never overdone. They manage to balance out some amazing lyrics with a bold, crisp "post-punk" sound that rocks a bit harder than anything Dashboard. Yet they still have that ability to give you a range of feelings from that warm fuzzy to serious goosebumps. :)
Other songs to Check Out: "Roll Up Your Sleeves" and "Keeping Warm"
As always, thanks for reading and listening. Enjoy (and I promise to update more often!!!)

Rogue Wave, The Morning After Girls, & Soft Black
Okay Okay...so apparently I'm MISERABLE at keeping up with this in the summer. Haha So...getting down to business since I'm MUCH overdue...
Old:Rogue Wave--"Eyes"
This falls into my own personal category of what I like to call Rainy Day Music. :) You know what I mean...that relaxing music that you can put on and just lay down and listen to. Hailing from Oakland, California, this indie rock band is a favorite of mine. Personally, there is not really another band I can liken them to. They have their own sound. It's sort of that California sound. But its fresh and different at the same time. It's one of those things where there isn't much to say, it's better if you just...listen. :)
Other Songs to Check Out: "Harmonium" and "Lake Michigan"
New: The Morning After Girls--"To Be Your Loss"
This psychedelic rock band just recently relocated to New York from Melbourne, Australia! They just released an album on July 7th titled "Alone" to great reviews. "To Be Your Loss" is the first song that caught my attention. However, their hit "The General Public" seems to really summarize their overall sound. Although they are know for the high volume levels at which they perform their live music, they also know the power of toning it down a bit which can be seen in a handful of their more mellow pieces. The contrast between their songs is one of the things I really enjoy about their music. So...follow their lead, and mine. Turn it on...and turn it WAY up!!! :)
Other Songs to Check Out: "The General Public" and "Alone"
New:Soft Black--"The Lions"
Love Love LOVE this new find! Another New York based band, popular on the underground music scene. Many reviews characterize their sound/music as antifolk which a genre I'm not entirely familiar with. Personally I'd go more along the lines of something like a garage kind of sound. Lead singer and frontman Vincent Cacchione developed the lyrics for their newest album based on his nightmares. Rolling Stone Magazine likened his sound to "a kind of bizarro-world Neil Young with less polish and more paranoia". These grim lyrics are juxtaposed by the rather upbeat sound of many of their songs. Their sound is also comprised of a lot of reverb and "old school" sounding guitar, which is another reason I really like them.
Other Songs to Check Out: "The Earth is Black" and "The Girl Who Ate Her Own Heart"
Unfortunately, both of my new bands are just that...new. And so far I have been unable to find the songs I've recommended that allow me to upload them for your listening pleasure. I will update as soon as I find them for you. But I urge you to check them out on your own. They both have MySpace pages (which you can see without a MySpace page of your own!) :)

Grizzly Bear & Arctic Monkeys
I know...yet again, It's been a century! I apologize. Summer school has been keeping me far busier than I had ever hoped it would. Last weekend was my boyfriends birthday and I got him Coldplay tickets. They were playing locally ON his birthday, and they're a band on both of our "Must See Before We Die" lists. Therefore, it was kind of a no-brainer. I have to say...best purchase and experience of my life. Hands down. They put on THE most amazing concert. It was like a religious experience. Hahaha In all seriousness, it was beyond impressive. The vibe was so electric..and contagious. It was amazing. My description can't even do it justice. If you ever have the opportunity to see them live, DO NOT PASS IT UP! :)
Now...without further ado...(After all...you've waited long enough, haven't you?) these are todays's picks!!! Two oldies...cause I'm in that kinda mood. :)
Old: Grizzly Bear--"Knife"
They are a band I found on MySpace probably almost two years ago. But I have neglected them for far too long. I liked them when I first heard them, but far too often the endless sea of new musical selections that consumes my life lets some really great bands slip through the cracks sometimes. This band played locally a few days ago, which reminded me that I should really get back to listening to them. This Brooklyn-based indie rock band classifies their music as experimental/folk rock. They quickly garnered the attention of many big name musicians including Paul Simon and the members of Radiohead. Last summer (2008) they actually ended up opening for Radiohead on tour. They definitely have a unique sound, but that is why I love them! So...check em out! :)
Other songs to check out: "Two Weeks"
Old: Arctic Monkeys--"Flourescent Adolescent"
Another band I had heard of quite some time ago, but upon learning of my upcoming adventure to Lollapalooza, where this group would be playing, I have developed a semi-obsession. :) This English rock band reached stardom with the help of their fans, who created a MySpace page for them and spread copies of their homemade demos--gaining them major recognition throughout England. Band member Alex Turner sings lead vocals, and his thick accent is definitely one of the things that made me fall in love with the band. Turner's accent paired with their catchy dance tunes makes the Arctic Monkeys irresistible. Check them out--I think you'll agree.
Other songs to check out: "Mardy Bum" and "I Bet You Look Good On the Dance Floor"
